PTE Exam Overview

What is PTE?

PTE: English Language Exam Test, A computer-based exam provides access to studying overseas and a work permit. PTE Exam is created and developed by Pearson {Australia} since 2009. On a single day is exam is conducted for test takers by PTE. Types of PTE Test

PTE Test Structure

This exam assesses the candidate on following skills

  • Speaking and Writing (these are clubbed together)
  • Reading
  • Listening

The total duration for whole test is 2 hours 15 minutes

Speaking and Writing (54- 67 minutes)

  • Read aloud (5-6 questions)
    The candidate is required to read a written excerpt from the screen. Candidate’s ability to read and speak appropriately is the tested ability.
  • Repeat sentence (10-12 questions)
    Candidate will listen an audio and right after that they need to repeat the exact sentence in the microphone.
  • Describe image (4-5 questions)
    The candidate needs to describe all the major elements of an image displayed on the screen.
  • Re-tell lecture for Academic / Respond to situation for Core (3-4 questions) –
    The test-taker needs to listen to the lecture and present the key points describing the introductory, main and concluding ideas. OR, they need to give an appropriate/ prompt answer to situation.
  • Answer short question (10-12 questions)
    The candidate needs to answer a question based on general information or knowledge. Here the answers are objective for not more than 4 words.

Writing Section

This module takes account of a person’s competence at testing analytical skills and comprehending the written excerpt.

  • Summarize written text (1-3)
    The candidate needs to present the summary of the written passage mentioning all the relevant aspects using one sentence.
  • Essay writing for Academic / Email writing for Core (1-2)
    The candidate needs to write an analytical essay using 200-300 words dealing with the question prompt appropriately within 20 minutes. OR, they need to write an email of 100 words within 9 minutes.

Reading Section (around 30 Minutes)

This accounts the candidate’s capability to be able to read and understand written English.

  • Multiple choice questions, single answer (2-3 questions)
    There are four given options for a question which is based upon a reading extract out of which you need to select 1 correct answer.
  • Multiple choice questions, multiple answers (2-3 questions)The candidate has to choose multiple correct answer ( which can vary from 2-4 answers) from the given options based upon reading of the given extract. There is a negative marking for each incorrect response.
  • Re-order paragraphs (3-4 questions)
    Here the candidate needs to arrange the given paragraphs in correct sequence. For each consecutive right pair candidate will get 1 mark.
  • Fill in the blanks- Reading (4-5 questions)
    The applicant needs to drag the possible options and drop them in the spaces provided.
  • Fill in the blanks- Reading and Writing (5-6 questions)
    The candidate needs to choose 1 correct answer from four possible options for each given blank.

Listening Section (around 30 Minutes)

This component assesses a person’s ability to comprehend Spoken English in varied accents.

  • Summarize spoken text (2-3 questions)
    The test taker needs to prepare a summary using 50- 70 words based on the lecture he is made to listen. Here candidate needs to listen and write within10 minutes.
  • Multiple choice-choose multiple responses (2-3 questions) The candidate has to select the possible options from an audio they will listen. Here choosing a wrong option can lead to negative marking.
  • Highlight the correct summary (2-3 questions)
    A person has to choose one option out of four rendered options for summary of the spoken excerpt.
  • Fill in the blanks (2-3 questions)
    The audio has a few blanks which is to be filled in as the audio goes on.
  • Select the missing word (2-3 questions)
    At the end of the audio shall be a beep which has four plausible options to choose from.
  • Highlight the incorrect word (2-3 questions) As the audio goes on, the audio script on the screen has a few errors which needs to be selected by the candidate. Here selecting incorrect word leads to negative marking.
  • Write from Dictation
    The candidate needs to write the exact sentence as it flows in the audio.

Q1: Is PTE More Difficult Than IELTS?

Ans: No. It is a common misconception that PTE is more difficult than the IELTS examination. On the contrary, it is a computer-based exam and eliminates any possibility of human error during evaluation of the test. There is no physical interview in this test which is an advantage for those candidates who feel anxious while speaking in front of the invigilator. Also, reading is generally easier than the IELTS exam as it does not require extensive reading excerpts.

Is PTE valid in Canada?

Both IELTS and PTE hold validity in the country but PTE should be the preferred test type as with same amount of time and efforts one can reach their desired score quite early.
